Mrs. Jannes has served in the field of education for thirty-four years.  She earned a bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College with majors in Psychology and Education and Philosophy.  Mrs. Jannes earned a Master’s of Arts degree from Columbia University’s Teachers’ College and completed her doctoral coursework at Columbia after earning a full merit scholarship.  She majored in Educational Leadership and Staff Development.  Mrs. Jannes is a certified school administrator and elementary school teacher.

Mrs. Jannes began her education career as a sixth-grade teacher and then transitioned into a Gifted and Talented Specialist responsible for staff development.  She spent several years teaching during the day and consulting in school systems in the late afternoons.  The spouse of a Coast Guard Officer, Mrs. Jannes left New York and landed in Northern Virginia, serving as a Gifted and Talented Specialist in Fairfax County Public Schools.  Mrs. Jannes also taught graduate courses in gifted education and was a teacher mentor.

Another military transfer brought Mrs. Jannes and her family to Key West in 2006.  Her husband served as the Deputy of Coast Guard Sector Key West from 2006-2010 until he retired.  Mrs. Jannes participated as a member of the Founding Team of Sigsbee Charter School, was on the original Board of Directors, and has served as Principal of Sigsbee Charter School since it opened in 2010.

During her years at Sigsbee Charter School, enrollment at SCS has more than doubled, the school has been awarded several grants and  has received an A rating for 12 consecutive years.  SCS has also been named a School of Excellence by the State Department of Education.  Mrs. Jannes received the Champion Charter School Leader award in 2014.

Mrs. Jannes is the proud parent of two Sigsbee graduates, Taylor and Dylan.  Taylor graduated from Emory University and works in a law firm in Atlanta, while Dylan attends the University of Florida (Go Gators!).

In her spare time, Mrs. Jannes enjoys hanging out with her family, and her cat, Barnacle.  They often spend time at her farm in New Hampshire.  She spends her time traveling, reading by the water, boating, taking many photos, and cheering her kids on during their athletic events.

Even Cutter loves to read!

The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think - rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men.  ~Bill Beattie
