WALKING FIELD TRIPS
As you know, Sigsbee is a marine science/environmental education-focused school. We are excited to get
children hands-on experiences that expose them to the many opportunities that Key West has available to them.
The school’s prime location enables teachers to walk students a short distance on the base and introduce them to various ecosystems and their inhabitants.
Possible adventures include, but are not limited to, mangrove exploration, hermit crab hunts, and hikes to identify native Florida species. Other walking trips may include visits to the Commissary (grocery store) or Exchange (department store) on base.
There are circumstances where students will benefit from wading into the water (below the knees) to retrieve
specimens. Teachers will send a notice home the day before the activity to inform you that your child will need
adequate water, sunscreen, and water shoes. No bare feet or flip-flops will be allowed wading. Students must
wear sneakers during transit for all wading trips.
Signing the policy review document grants permission for your child to attend all walking field trips.
