
Sigsbee Charter School - Principal - Eli Jannes
Eli Jannes "Queen Bee" has been an educator, staff developer, curriculum, and school administrator for the past 20 years. She has worked with schools across the country in developing curriculum, benchmarks, and assessments to align with state standards as well as in the creation of interdisciplinary, differentiated curriculum tailored to a school's mission and vision. Eli received her master's in Curriculum and Teaching and School Administration from Columbia University in New York. She completed her doctoral work at Columbia, focusing on gifted education and serving the individual needs of diverse learners within an environment. Eli was recognized as the Teacher of the Year for Gifted Students in Northern Virginia for two consecutive years. She has two children who attend Sigsbee Charter School and has been working on the charter school effort since its inception, as an initial member of the Founding Team.
Sigsbee Charter School - Teacher Representative - Erica Baugh
Erica Baugh loves her job teaching science to Kindergarten through 5th grades at Sigsbee! She brings her hands-on environmental education experience and passion for the ocean into the science classroom at Sigsbee. Erica has been an environmental educator since 2004, teaching hands-on environmental science to children and adults throughout the east coast. Graduating with a B.S. in Natural Resources Education from Virginia Tech, she has used her skills to educate through the U.S.D.A Forest Service in Virginia, NOAA in Maryland, the North Carolina Coastal Reserve, and Dewees Island in South Carolina. Recently, Erica was a Marine Science Instructor with NHMI at Seacamp, worked at the Montessori Elementary Charter School in Key West and last year was one of Sigsbee's science teachers.
Sigsbee Charter School - Parent Representative - Mercedes Stevenson
Mercedes Stevenson moved to Key West two years ago with her husband and daughter who is a student at Sigsbee. She currently works for the Key West Butterfly Conservatory. She has a background in early childhood development from her past career with the Army and Air Force child and youth programs. Mercedes was also a student support assistant for three years with Anne Arundel County Public Schools in Maryland. She is currently the Treasurer for the Sigsbee Student Family Alliance.
Naval Air Station Key West - School Liaison Officer - Dr. Suzanne Bryant
During her 30 years as an educational leader, Dr Bryant has served as a teacher, special educator, principal, curriculum director, superintendent of schools, university instructor and organizational developer. Her work in the Florida Keys includes needs assessment, evaluation, visioning and strategic planning for Monroe County School District, Wesley House and Healthy Start. From January 2007 through July 2008, Suzanne developed and directed the "Living Laboratory" program, a collaborative effort of the Key West Botanical Garden and the Monroe County School District, which served over 2000 children and 106 teachers in the Lower Keys. Suzanne and her husband, Les Dudley, moved to Key West from Vermont in 2003. They have three children and three grandchildren, two of whom attend Gerald Adams Elementary School.
Legal Council - Michelle S. Maxwell
Michelle Maxwell is an associate attorney at the law offices of Horan, Wallace & Higgins in Key West practicing civil and criminal law. Michelle holds a J.D. from West Virginia University, a MLS from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and a BA from Shepherd University. She serves on the Admiralty Law Committee of the Florida Bar and is on the Education Committee for WomanKind. She is a novice gourmet, an avid skeet shooter, and a strong supporter of community based education.
Michael McPherson
Michael McPherson is the Program Development Specialist at Florida Keys Community College. Michael earned his Bachelor's in Biology from Florida State University and his Masters in Education from the University of West Florida. He has seven years of teaching experience in both high school and college and is a lifetime Key West Community Member. Michael was a member of the charter schools' Founding Team and continues to provide support and guidance with a postsecondary education perspective.
Jim Olive
Jim Olive recently retired from the US Coast Guard and has two children who attend Sigsbee Charter School. He has been very involved with the School Board issues involving Sigsbee and in the initial stages of creating the Charter School to replace the current school. Jim moved to Key West after serving in the Coast Guard's Office of Budget and Programs. He brings financial management skills as well as extensive governance experience to the Board. Jim is committed to the notion of creating a source of quality education tailored to the specific needs of military children found in Key West.
Karen Thurman
Karen has been the Director of Sales and Marketing at Doubletree Grand Key Resort for the past 9 years. She and her 21 year old daughter, Karly, are 19 yr residents of Key West relocating here after spending 9 years in the US Virgin Islands. Karen is active in many local clubs and organizations. She served as the first female President of the Rotary Club of Key West in 2002-2003. She has also served on the board of directors for the Key West Chamber of Commerce, Helpline, Inc, the Key West Attractions Association, the Key West Drambuie Marlin Tournament and the Key West Founders Society. Karen is also an ATF licensed Pyrotecnician and coordinates Key West's annual July 4th fireworks display. Karen was a member of Sigsbee Charter School's Founding Team and continues to work on the school's fundraising efforts.
